Hospital's New Acute Rehab Facility Features an Apartment, Grocery Store and Much More as the Metro's Largest Facility
North Kansas City Hospital opened the city’s largest, most comprehensive Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation facility last month. The existing department was not only remodeled but physically enlarged from 24 to 30 patient rooms, expanded services and moved to a new location on the 4th Floor of the Hospital.
Staff began accepting patients on March 19 in the new space that features all private rooms. Research shows that private rooms expedite a patient’s recovery.
The new rehabilitation gym boasts 1,800 square feet, enlarged from the previous 300 square feet. The gym allows patients to practice real-world scenarios in the comfort of a hospital setting, like a complete front porch and entry. The gym also features a Nintendo Wii™ to increase balance, coordination and visual perception and is equipped to meet the needs of bariatric patients.
Other real-world settings in the department include a fully functional kitchen to practice cooking, a spacious dining room, a washer and dryer and grocery store to learn how to physically handle grocery shopping and practice exchanging money.
A transitional living apartment is a new feature that allows individuals to encounter situations to gain confidence and skills to function safely at home.
“This beautiful facility is met with open arms by the medical community. North Kansas City Hospital is honored to be able to accept and help rehabilitate patients from other prestigious hospitals in the area," says Christine Snedden, director of Acute Rehab.
