Breast Cancer Does Not Define Me

Determined not to let cancer beat her or define her, Tami wasn't about to feel sorry for herself when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While the cancer was on one side, Tami opted for a double mastectomy. The reality of her disease set in when she started losing her hair at Christmas. Facing the challenges that come with this diagnosis, she got through her chemo treatment and began thinking of reconstruction. Her surgeon, Brian Wittek, MD referred her to plastic surgeon, Paul Leahy, MD where he met with her to discuss her expectations. She felt it was important to have the reconstruction, for her, it was a way to heal and feel whole again. Dr. Leahy's goal is to try to give back what the patient has lost from cancer and that's more than the physical attributes, but the confidence and the ability to move on with life.
Anyone can gain motivation from Tami's good spirit and determination. She was lucky to have lots of support, but as she says, attitude really is everything.
