Earning Her Wings

Giving the gift of life earned Kim Baucom her wings. She donated her kidney to her lifelong best friend. She shares her story with the hope that people consider organ donation to help their loved ones and others in need.

Currently, there are nearly 2,000 people in Missouri and 1,000 people in Kansas waiting for a life-saving transplant. Ninety percent of Americans say they support donation, but only 30% know the steps needed to become a donor.

Kim Baucom, living organ donorWhen Kim received an e-mail from her friend describing her health condition, it hit Kim that she could donate her kidney. "I told her maybe this was my opportunity to earn my wings," says Kim. A blood test confirmed that Kim was an exact match for her friend. It took almost a year to have tests and get on the appropriate lists before the transplant took place. "A week before the surgery, my friend gave me a necklace with angel wings and a green stone in the middle. Green is the color for organ donation. She says she has never felt better, and I’m glad I could help her. I felt honored to do this," says Kim.
