Our First CMO

Gary Carter, MD, was appointed North Kansas City Hospital’s first ChiefGary Carter Medical Officer (CMO) on October 1, 2012. Most of you have known Dr. Carter as one of our Emergency Medicine physicians and the Medical Director of Quality for North Kansas City Hospital. Dr. Carter supports the organization’s forward drive to create an environment where creative and economical healthcare delivery is the key to our successful future.

“North Kansas City Hospital is very special to me. I first came here as a patient and I have served patients at this Hospital for over 22 years,” he says. “I have an affinity for its employees and the community. The Hospital’s vote of confidence in naming me to this new position has special meaning.”  

In his new role, Dr. Carter will:

  • Serve as a communications facilitator with physicians.
  • Work closely with the leadership team and board of trustees to provide leadership and oversight for strategic planning.
  • Coordinate new initiatives with physicians and conduct physician outreach in Northwest Missouri.
  • Manage ongoing cost and quality directives in this era of reduced medical reimbursements.

About Dr. Carter

Dr. Carter joined the Medical Staff in 1990 as a physician in the Emergency Department. After completing an MBA, he became involved in Hospital administration as the Medical Director of Quality. Dr. Carter attended Northwest Missouri State University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City for his undergraduate and Master’s degrees. He earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City-School of Medicine and completed his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Louisville-School of Medicine. In 2008, Dr. Carter earned his MBA from the University of Tennessee. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Carter is also a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Missouri Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Carter has been published in medical journals and served as guest lecturer on numerous occasions. He has also served as both president elect and president of North Kansas City Hospital’s medical staff.
