Pathology Group Offers 24-Hour Accessibility

Timely, accurate test results are essential because “the majority of medical decisions are driven by laboratory medicine,” says Brett W. Sramek, DO, FCAP, laboratory medical director for North Kansas City Hospital and MAWD Pathology Group partner. “Physicians use diagnostic test results to determine therapy and proper treatment.”

MAWDMAWD has served the Northland since 1968 and provides the full spectrum of anatomical and clinical pathology services for the hospital and outpatient physician’ offices.

Dr. Sramek refers to the pathologist as “the doctor’s doctor,” as a MAWD’s pathologist helps a physician determine how pathology results should guide treatment recommendations for a patient.

Board Certifications

All MAWD pathologists are board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and most hold additional board certifications in hematopathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, blood banking and molecular pathology.

Additionally, MAWD has the Northland’s only board certified molecular pathologist, Sam Caughron, MD, and an independent molecular pathology lab. MAWD performs a wide range of molecular tests for breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, skin cancer and coagulation genetics. The group is also recognized for its large dermatopathology consult service. “As a state of the art laboratory, our services and our relationships with clinicians are paramount. Our goal is to be available and always make sure the right test is performed at the right time,” says Sramek. Dr. Sramek completed his surgical pathology fellowship at Yale University and focused on GI pathology as an area of interest. “When I worked in a different part of the country with a different patient population, I saw more complicated cases and worked with experts in the field,” he said. Dr. Sramek has general pathology sign-out responsibilities with additional areas of interest in GI pathology and laboratory administration.
