For people with swallowing disorders (dysphagia), North Kansas City Hospital offers an innovative treatment called VitalStim swallowing therapy. This FDA-approved treatment has been highly effective in restoring quality of life for many patients affected by dysphagia.
Advanced Therapy for Swallowing Disorders
VitalStim is a painless, noninvasive electrical stimulation therapy that stimulates the muscles responsible for swallowing and helps to "re-educate" them. VitalStim is a welcome alternative treatment for dysphagia, which is often managed through the use of a feeding tube to provide adequate patient nutrition.
Our specially-trained speech-language pathologists are certified in VitalStim therapy using the latest technology which provides the patient with immediate feedback on muscle movement during swallowing. They work one-on-one with patients to develop a customized treatment plan, often using VitalStim in conjunction with other swallowing therapies to benefit patients with swallowing disorders resulting from:
- Neuromuscular disease processes, such as Parkinson’s and ALS
- Head and neck cancers – post radiation and/or surgery
- Deconditioning as a result of age or co-morbidity
