Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Ask your doctor about caffeine consumption. It is recommended that you eliminate or reduce your caffeine intake to less than 300 mg per day.

  • Average cup of coffee has 150 mg
  • Black tea has about 80 mg
  • 12-ounce soda contains 30-60 mg
  • Even chocolate and some medications contain caffeine

Prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid are important to decrease the risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida. You can buy over-the-counter prenatal vitamins that has the recommended 400 micrograms of folic acid.

Eliminate alcohol consumption and quit smoking.

Eat healthy! Talk with your doctor about the consumption of fish and limit intake of lunch meats and packaged foods. Drink plenty of water.

As soon as you find out you are pregnant, schedule an appointment with your physician. Regularly scheduled visits are crucial to make sure the development of your baby is progressing normally.
