Minutes Matter: NKCH Recognized for Enhanced Cardiac Care Services

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ Time Critical Diagnosis Unit designated North Kansas City Hospital as a Level I STEMI center. STEMI is a common name for ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), a serious heart attack caused by a blockage in one of the heart’s main arteries. NKCH is the only hospital in the Northland, and only one of three hospitals in the metro, to achieve the elite Level I designation, the highest level awarded.

“North Kansas City Hospital is committed to providing our patients with the highest quality cardiac care,” explains Jody Abbott, senior vice president and chief operating officer at NKCH. “The state was vigorous in its evaluation of hospitals, and this validates we are providing immediate critical, life-saving care to our patients and delivering the best possible outcomes.”

Annually, more than 250,000 people in the U.S. suffer a STEMI heart attack, typically considered the most deadly. It often presents suddenly with extreme pain. Time is critical because blood flow must be restored as quickly as possible to save a patient’s life and prevent long-term damage. Designated STEMI centers are equipped with the staff and technology needed to provide heart attack patients with quick and responsive care that results in improved survival and recovery rates.

“When someone suffers a heart attack, it’s a race against time to provide the necessary care,” says Gary Carter, MD, chief medical officer at NKCH. “We have the resources, staff and expertise to provide that care quickly, right in the heart of Kansas City.”

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ Time Critical Diagnosis Unit is a statewide system that coordinates the 911 response system, ambulance services and hospitals in a way that provides patients the right care, at the right place, in the right amount of time.
