Founded by Dr. Hierholzer in 2000, COVERSA is a nonprofit organization that provides services to victims of sexual assault. It educates nurses about collecting forensic evidence properly and educates the community about sexual assault issues. It’s representatives collaborate with police, legal and judicial representatives. Before COVERSA, a victim’s only option was to receive treatment at an ED. Often, victims opted not to go through with the exam if they had to wait in the ER or be examined by clinical staff not specifically trained in the sensitivities around sexual assault.
