A unique feature of the North Kansas City Hospital Bariatric Center is the assistance of these health professionals in one location to teach skills for lifelong weight loss.

Dr. BerghoffSurgeon Keenan Berghoff, MD

Keenan Berghoff, MD, medical director of the bariatric program, is a board certified general surgeon with specialized training in advanced laparoscopic surgery and bariatric procedures. He received an undergraduate degree from Indiana University and earned his medical doctorate degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery training at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, Mo., and a fellowship in advanced laparoscopy at the Texas Endosurgery Institute in San Antonio, Tx. Dr. Berghoff has served as an associate professor of surgery for the University of Missouri, Kansas City and has published numerous journal articles on techniques and advantages of minimally invasive surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic surgeons and a committee member of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He looks at bariatric surgery as an effective tool that helps motivated patients lose weight and live healthier, happier lives.

Todd HillPsychiatrist Todd Hill, DO

Todd Hill, DO, is board certified in General Psychiatry by the American Academy of Psychiatry and Neurology. He received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences-College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City and then completed his residency in General Psychiatry at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Hill serves as Medical Director of Psychiatric Services at North Kansas City Hospital. He is Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bio Sciences and a founding partner and medical director for Signature Behavioral Health which focuses on physician-directed mental health intensive outpatient programs in the Kansas City area. Dr. Hill is certified by the SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) to treat addiction. He currently practices with Northland Psychiatric SpecialistsDr. Hill is well known for his compassionate and conservative care of patients with mental illness and he believes that medication is just a small part in the treatment for these patients.

Allyssa Plymell, FNP-C

Allyssa Plymell, MSN, FNP-C

Allyssa Plymell is a board certified Nurse Practitioner. She received her Masters degree in Nursing at the University of Missouri Kansas City and completed her Bachelors degree in Nursing at Missouri Western State University. Before joining the Bariatric Center team, she worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Gastroenterology for 3 years and worked as an RN caring for post-operative bariatric patients for 4 years. Allyssa is committed to helping people live healthy lives and feel good about themselves.  

Vernada CooperVernada Cooper, RN

Vernada Cooper, RN, BSN, has worked at North Kansas City Hospital (NKCH) for more than 25 years. Before joining the Bariatrics Center team, she worked in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Acute Pain management and the Pre-Surgery Clinic. “Working with bariatric patients was not only a professional choice but also a personal one,” Vernada says. “As a bariatric patient myself, I know first-hand what our patients experience. I try to live by the philosophy that food is my fuel, not my comfort, reward or motivation.” Vernada attended Burge School of Nursing (now Lester L. Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences), Springfield, MO, and completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. She is a current member of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses.

Becky HagerBecky Hager, Registered Dietitian

Becky Hager is an outpatient and bariatric dietitian who is excited about joining the bariatric team at North Kansas City Hospital. She received a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics: Food and Nutrition from Northwest Missouri State University and completed her dietetic internship through Iowa State University. She’s also a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Becky works one-on-one with patients to provide dietary advice and promote healthy eating habits to nourish their body. She enjoys helping her patients make lifestyle changes while motivating and celebrating their individual successes throughout their weight loss journey. 

Tricia MayTricia May, Program Coordinator

Tricia May has been a registered nurse since 1996 and has been an employee of North Kansas City Hospital since 2001. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Truman State University but earned her RN after her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and he encouraged her to follow her passion for helping people. Tricia is a dedicated and skilled nurse and has worked in a variety of settings from Home Health to Pre-surgery Testing to the Operating Room. In her role as program coordinator, Tricia will support individuals throughout their weight loss journey to ensure success.

JackieJackie Roth, Registered Dietitian

Jackie Roth is the outpatient and bariatric dietitian at North Kansas City Hospital. She received a bachelor’s degree in dietetics and nutrition from the University of Missouri and completed her master’s of science degree in dietetics and nutrition from the University of Kansas Medical Center. She is also a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Kansas City Dietetic Association. Jackie is an advocate for her patients and empowers them to take control of their lives. She helps patients learn to fit foods into their lives in a healthy way and works with people on the emotional component of eating. Jackie is also involved with the bariatric center social media and support groups where she helps keep people connected to each other and in touch with the program.

Lori SnappLori Snapp, Director

Lori Snapp is the director of North Kansas City Hospital’s Bariatric Center and has been with the hospital for 25 years. She received her Bachelors of Science in nursing from Washburn University. She manages the bariatric program and its operations and helped the center earn accreditation status. Lori also manages North Kansas City Hospital's Pain Management Clinic.

Ann ThomasonAnn Thomason, RN

Ann Thomason has been an registered nurse since 1984 and has been employed at NKCH since 1992. She received her BSN through Rockhust/Research College of Nursing. She has spend most of her nursing career working with surgery patients. She is excited to part of the Bariatric Progam and assist patients with their weight loss journey.

Andrea WestpfahlAndrea Westpfahl, Patient Care Technician

Andrea is a 28 year hospital employee who joins the Bariactric Center in the position of Secretary. She is excited to be part of a team dedicated to helping patients achieve success on their weight loss journey. Her background in patient care and her organizational skills will aid in making patients experiences pleasant and personal.
