Swelling

Chemotherapy, some types of cancer, hormone changes, medications and other health problems can cause swelling. It is most noticeable in the feet, ankles, hands and face.

Prevent Swelling

  • Elevate the feet, when possible.
  • Read food labels and avoid foods with a high salt content.
  • Try not to stand or walk for too long at one time.
  • Wear special stockings, loose clothing and shoes that are not too tight.
  • Weigh at the same time every day.

When to Call the Doctor

Tell the doctor about:

  • An irregular or pounding heartbeat
  • Major decrease in urine output
  • New swelling in the body
  • Quick weight gain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden swelling or swelling that gets worse
