Preparing for Your Procedure

We want your colonoscopy or endoscopic procedure to go as smoothly as possible.

Plan Ahead

  • Check with your health insurance company in advance to make sure your procedure is covered.
  • Your appointment is scheduled through our Outpatient Surgery Department. A member of our Admitting staff will call to verify information and discuss your insurance copay, if needed.
  • Expect to spend about two hours at the hospital.
  • Bring a list of your current medications, including over-the-counter medications and supplements.
  • Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions for preparing for the procedure, including directions about taking blood thinners.
  • Drink plenty of fluids the day before your procedure to help cleanse your system. (Please avoid drinking any red liquids.)
  • Do not drink anything two hours before your procedure. If you do, your procedure may be cancelled or postponed.
  • Do not take Metformin on the day of your procedure.
  • Leave all jewelry and other valuables at home.
  • Make sure you have someone to drive you to the procedure and home afterward. If you do not have a driver, your procedure may be cancelled.

When You Arrive

  • Check in at the GI Lab registration desk (7th Floor Pavilion) at the scheduled time.
  • We’ll review your insurance, help you complete any forms and ask about your current medications. To save time at check in, print and complete the following forms and bring them with you: Health and History form and Medications List
  • After your paperwork is complete, we’ll bring you to the admitting area, where you’ll change into a hospital gown. A nurse will review your information, check your vital signs and start your IV.
  • When the surgeon is ready, we’ll take you to the procedure room.

After Your Procedure

  • After your procedure, you’ll spend some time in the recovery room.
  • Once the sedation wears off, your doctor will discuss the results with you and send you home.
