Interventional Radiology

Some medical conditions that once required surgery can now be treated nonsurgically using minimally invasive, image-guided techniques. This medical subspecialty is called interventional radiology.

The board-certified interventional radiologists at North Kansas City Hospital are specially trained in minimally invasive, targeted procedures used across many medical specialties. Examples of interventional procedures include:

  • Angioplasty and stent placement to repair blocked arteries
  • Needle biopsies such as breast or lung biopsies to obtain tissue samples
  • Radiofrequency ablation to treat tumors, heart rhythm disorders, chronic pain and other conditions

Benefits of Interventional Radiology

Using X-rays, CT, MRI and other imaging methods, interventional radiologists guide special instruments through the blood vessels of body instead of large incisions used in conventional surgery. These interventional procedures have become the primary method of care for a variety of conditions, resulting in less risk of infection, less pain and shorter recovery times for you as a patient.
