Castle Connolly Honors NKCH and Meritas Health with Top Hospital-Gold Standard Award
May 22, 2025
North Kansas City Hospital and Meritas Health was recognized as a Top Hospital by Castle Connolly in three procedures. The inaugural list recognized the health system as a Top Hospital for Gastroenterology and Bariatrics-Hernia Repair Surgery. The hospital also received the prestigious Top Hospital-Gold Standard designation in two areas: Obstetrics and Gynecology-C-section, and Gastroenterology and Bariatrics-Colon Surgery. Only 10 hospitals in each state can earn Gold Standard recognition for a given procedure.
“It is a true honor to have several of our procedures recognized by Castle Connolly as Top Hospitals,” said Steven Starr, MD, FACC, chief medical officer of NKCH. “This recognition reflects the dedication of our team and the quality of care we provide each day. Our commitment to data-driven, compassionate care remains the cornerstone of our efforts, continually setting new standards of excellence.”
Castle Connolly Top Hospitals was born out of an increasing need for transparency and trust in healthcare and to connect patients to premier providers. The list builds on more than 30 years of experience researching and selecting top doctors. Top Hospitals recognizes over 1,400 hospitals for their excellence in performing specific medical procedures. Each area of recognition is selected for analysis based on patient volume, level of specialization and the comparison of outcomes across health systems.
To be recognized as a Top Hospital, institutions undergo a rigorous evaluation that uses private and public medical claims data to capture the full patient journey. Hospitals are assessed on performance measures such as mortality and complication rates, patient safety, failure-to-rescue rates and physician expertise, measured in part by the presence and influence of Castle Connolly Top Doctors.
