New AI-based Chart Scrubbing Technology Arrives
September 12, 2024
In June, Meritas Health implemented Notable HCC Chart Review, an AI-based chart-scrubbing technology, to decrease provider burnout and alleviate some of the coding burden. This technology will help chart scrub hierarchical condition categories, or HCCs, for primary care and cardiology offices. It was initially tested with providers at Meritas Health Smithville, Meritas Health Briarcliff and Meritas Health Vivion in May.
The chart-scrubbing technology will seek out key text and values for 26 HCCs ahead of a patient’s scheduled appointment, then suggest recommended diagnoses to be added to the patient’s problem list.
Depending on the reason for the appointment and provider availability, the provider can choose to accept, reject or defer the provisional diagnosis the technology points out. The key benefit for providers is that this is embedded in their existing workflows for easy adoption.
“The addition of this technology has allowed our coders to focus on other HCCs,” said Todd Beardman, MD, NKCH chief medical information officer. “It also provides our physicians with great information directly in their workflow that impacts patient care.”
